Diabetes Awareness Month - November 2023

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month!

Diabetes is one of the leading causes of disability and death in the United States. If left untreated, diabetes can cause serious health problems, like blindness, nerve damage, and kidney disease.

Here are some helpful facts to manage and prevent Diabetes:

Stay Active.

‍Regular exercise maintains your weight, reduces stress, controls blood pressure and keeps your cholesterol, and triglyceride levels in check. Get at least 30 minutes a day of aerobic exercise 5 days a week.    

Healthy Diet.

Maintain a healthy eating routine can aide in keeping you healthier. Eat more fruits, vegetables, beans, whole grains, low carbs, less fat, and healthy oils. Limit salt, added sugars, saturated fats and alcohol. Making smart food choices can help manage your weight and lower your risk.

Know your levels. ‍

Check your blood sugar level at least twice a day. Get A1C blood tests to find out your average blood sugar for the past 2 to 3 months. Most people with type 2 diabetes should aim for an A1C of 7% or lower.    

Sleep more & Stress less. ‍

People with diabetes who get enough sleep often have healthier eating habits and improved blood sugar levels. Avoid stress as it can elevate blood sugar levels. Try breathing exercises, yoga, taking walks or just sitting for 15 minutes to meditate should help reduce some stress.‍

Doctor Visits.

Keep up with routine visits. Get a complete checkup at least once a year and know your levels and follow-up if needed.
